Gel Nails: The Truth

Hey guys!!
Lately you have probably been hearing about gel nails, because they have been a big trend.

If you don't know what gel nails are they are a type of artificial nail, that is really close to your real nail so it doesnt look fake.
They last 2-4 weeks, which if you know how long regular polish lasts.. that's a big step up.
There is 2 different types, the gel nail that you put under a UV light type thing and one where you just apply a  top coat, type curing thing. You can go to a salon and get them done or there is at home treatments where it may come with the liquid curer or the UV light system.

My mom was talking to me because a lot of the people at her work, wear gel nails.
And they looked really good. And lasted such a long time.

She was watching Doctor Oz, and he was talking about these types of fake nails..
She found out that they aren't as good as they seem...

1) They can cause cancer.. The UV light that is used for curing the polish, is just like the sun beating down on your hands.. But it is very powerful and direct, and on your fingers and parts of your hands are exposed to it, it can cause skin cancer, and other problems with the skin on your hands.

2) Also, the UV light can cause aging in your hands since the rest of your hands aren't covered.. It can cause premature wrinkles, dry skin, and it may also cause darkening of the skin (not in a good way).

3) It is HORRIBLE for your nails. Now, polish isn't the greatest for your nails and it is good to let your nails breathe(; as one of my friend said.. But this really seals off your nails.. it lasts for a long long time so it really does not let your nails get any air, and let them "breathe". And since it lasts for like 3 weeks, it is close to impossible to get off. When you have regular polish on it can be tough to get off, and the acetone or non acetone polish remover damages, and dries out the nail. When you are trying to remove these gel nails, (this is what most people do there might be better ways) but you have to pack on the remover with cotton balls, and cotton pads, and then rap your nails in tinfoil and let the remover sit on your nails to get the polish off. After you get the "top layer" off , you still need to scrape and peel and just dig at your nails to get the rest off. It doesn't only rip off the polish but takes off layers of your nails, which makes your nails thin, brittle and then break easier. And if you are doing the gel top coat that is a curer for the polish, who knows what horrible things are in that to make your polish last that long... CONCLUSION BELOW

CONCLUSION
i would stay away from gel nails because of the effect it has on your natural nails, and what it can do to your health.
BEST BRAND OF POLISH IN THE DRUGSTORE.. LOVE IT, GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO  GEL NAILS.. AAAAAND IT IS ONLY AROUND 3 DOLLARS.. CAN FIND WALMART, ULTA, TARGET.. VARIETY OF COLORS!!!

if you still want a long lasting polish, check out regular brands like sally hansen, or opi. And invest in a good top coat to enhance the life of your polish..

I will probably do a nail care post, talking about what is bad for you nails, getting them back to full "health" and what you can do to get long healthy nails.

  1. Very, very nice post!
It’s not common to read beauty posts concerned to your beauty AND health! The “breathing” part is totally true! Nails (and also hair and tooth) are made of calcium carbonate and keratine. Calcium carbonate is mineral full of pores. If you don’t let air flows through it will rot! Same thing is valid when we are talking about hair! There are a thousand of ways to treat your hair, but NEVER, EVER, seal it! Every cell of our body MUST breath (even the dead ones like hair and nail).
Other thing: choose polish based on water! They are easier to remove! long Use of acetone (more than 4 times a week) may cause skin cancer on the edge of your nails!
I’m not an expert in beauty products. But I’m nice in chemistry and biology! =)
Well done girls! Keep up the good work! I may not be your “target public” but your blog is very interesting
